While this seems like a terrible fate, it implies something Peter would find encouraging: his faith would never fail him again. That doesn't mean Peter would be perfect (Galatians 2:11–14). It does mean his passionate desire to serve Jesus would define the rest of his life. Context Summary.

Jesus performed this miracle in order to not offend those who collected the two-drachma temple tax. This is the only miracle that Jesus performed in order to avoid offending people. Jesus typically performed miracles as well as made statements that were offensive to his audience, particularly the Jewish priesthood.

Peter denied Jesus three times, and Jesus allows Peter three opportunities to state his love for him. There is nothing magical about this number, other than it draws Peter into the fact that Jesus has already forgiven him for his three denials, loves him, and has a job for him to do.

Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”
