They are known to prey on cats, although numerous studies have shown that cats only make up a small percentage (0–2 percent) of the diets of urban coyotes. Unfortunately for cats and cat owners, this is not the case in Los Angeles, southern California, where up to 20 percent of coyote scats contain the cat remains.

Coyotes are naturally timid animals and will usually flee at the sight of a human. If they linger or approach, it's time to begin “hazing.” This is a term applied to the following actions that can be taken to scare coyotes and chase them away: Be as big and loud as possible.

Coyotes are attracted by bread, table scraps, seed, or even birds that come to the feeder. Secure garbage containers and eliminate garbage odors. Don't leave small children unattended outside if coyotes have been seen frequently in the area. Don't allow pets to run free.

Your dog's feces can attract coyotes to your property. Cleaning up poop on your property can lower the risk of attracting a coyote. You can use a pooper scooper or poop bags. Coyotes will also eat fallen fruit, so picking up any windfalls is a good idea.
